Hi All,
I have attended a few club rides & am looking forward to joining CWORB club & riding in the local Gina Nija ride in Feb. I currently have a 15yr old MTB & I think it's time that I upgraded to a lighter & better bike. I've been looking at a Giant Talo 0 29er & I'm interested in finding out riders opinion's on riding a 29er bike at Kinross. Some of the info I have seen states that a disadvantage of the 29er is using it in tight turning tree lined single track.
Anyone have any experience/feedback on the 29er's ridden locally.
Does the 29er perform well on the Kinross tracks??
If any one has any info/feedback on the talon 29er or similar bike around the $1K mark, I'd appreciate it.
Cheers
Craig

I've never ridden a 29er but seen a lot of people riding them out there with smiles on their faces so it can't be too bad. I've heard they roll over bumps a bit better but haven't got any first hand knowledge.
I also know DG's has 29ers down there I think for both merida or specialised.
Merida are bringing some Demo bikes (inc 29ers apparently) to the GN250 if you wanted to try some out too. Not sure if you wanted to buy before then or not…

I ride a 26 dual suspension and a 29er hard tail. I live in orange and race at most of the club races, I have also done quite a few 24hour races solo… I love the29er for kinross, it is smoother than the 26 inch hard tail it replaced, I run a 120mm fork and 2.2 rear / 2.4 inch front tyre at low pressures so it also grips very well. I think all the handling and turning… Depends more on which particular bike you get more than if it is big or small wheeled. in regular club races I have been faster on my 29er than my 26 inch. both are light carbon frames so I don't think weight is the reason for the difference. at big races there tend to be more 29ers than I see in general riding. there certainly is a difference, I guess it all depends on whether you like the difference.
I think they make most sense for tall riders.

I agree with Matt's comments. I live in Sydney but spend plenty of time out at kinross when we visit my in laws in orange. I have just swapped over from a 26" 100mm Specialized epic to a 29" 130mm specialized stumpy.I was worried that the bigger wheels and 2x10 would make the climbs out at kinross difficult (esp the steep and long climbs out the back). I actually found the opposite. The bigger wheels and extra momentum made the climbs easier and rolled over the ruts and root smoother. I found cornering harder, not because of the bigger wheels but due to extra speed meant you hit the corners much harder. Overall the 29er is great for Kinross and definitely recommend it.

Hello Craig,
Without any bias a 29er should be faster, smoother and more stable. If someone tells you they arent they are either a bad rider or a bad salesman.
There can be alot of physics involved but the reality is they are better, like the opinion up above.
Merida are supporting the Ginja Ninja event as is Darryl Grant Cycles, you should drop in and have a look at their range of bikes. Specialized are a market leader and pretty much across the board will get you a better bike for your buck. Giant are just a big manufacturer that makes a bike to a pricepoint, if you shop on price then at least compare Merida, if you want a better bike look no further then Specialized, its no coincidence that Spesh bikes won the world champs, world cup and alot of the worlds big one day races last year.
With bias, im organizing the GN race and work at DG cycles it would be good to get the chance to offer you a little more then the internet?! $1000 can buy you a great entry level MTB. We have Merida Big Nines in stock for your pricepoint.
Regards,
Rodney
